The McClure
Cup is an annual tennis competition between the Oakwood
Country Club tennis players and the Enid Tennis Association
players. The competition is named for long time Enid tennis player, Larry
McClure, who made tennis a part of his daily life up until his
passing in 2010 at the age of 82. He loved competitive
racquet sports such as tennis, badminton, and ping pong using his
feisty attitude to shake things up. In addition to his
building and development company, he enjoyed woodworking,
sailing, and traveling, always with a tennis racquet packed.
He even played on a clay court in Egypt against a man in a white robe!
Larry wanted to share his passion for tennis with others and the
city of Enid. He was one of the fathers of Oakwood Country
Club tennis and was instrumental in adding four exterior courts
and two interior courts. He was the general contractor for
the 9th street tennis courts built in the 70’s and helped
develop the tennis courts at Crosslin Park in 2008, personally
paying for and donating one court to the city of Enid.
Larry was a man of energy, optimism, generosity, and integrity.
He was an inspiration to us all. And, as he would always
say: “Let’s play one more for the championship!” |
